Microsoft announced that Xbox Full Screen Experience will launch on Windows 11 PCs in April 2026. The mode disables File Explorer and background services to reclaim roughly 2 GB of RAM. Gamers can activate it by pressing Win+F11, selecting the Xbox icon in Task View, or launching it from the Game Bar.

Project Helix, revealed at GDC 2026, includes the update as a shortcut to a dedicated gaming environment. The mode skips the desktop entirely. Microsoft confirmed the initial rollout targets select regions, though exact markets remain undisclosed.

Disabling File Explorer and related services releases about 2 GB of system memory. The freed memory can improve game performance, particularly on systems with limited RAM. The change also reduces background CPU load, improving game stability on systems with 8 GB or less of total RAM.

Press Win+F11 to enter Xbox FSE instantly. Open Task View on the taskbar and click the Xbox tile for a mouse‑friendly entry. Launch the Game Bar, select the Xbox icon, and confirm to switch without leaving the current session. All three methods preserve running applications in the background.

Xbox FSE supports the Microsoft Store, Steam, Battle.net, and other game stores. The mode launches games in a full‑screen, controller‑focused UI that mirrors handhelds like the ROG Ally and MSI Claw. Xbox FSE was previously available on these handhelds before rolling out to third-party devices and Windows 11 insider builds in Fall 2025.

Users can evaluate Xbox FSE's impact on their own game performance after the April rollout. The mode offers a streamlined gaming environment that prioritizes system resources for active games. Monitor availability updates as Microsoft expands regional support beyond the initial launch markets.
