YouTube is testing Auto Speed, a Premium feature that automatically accelerates playback to skip less engaging segments and get viewers straight to the content that matters most.
The experimental tool adjusts playback speed in real time, using AI to identify and move past intros, transitions, and filler content. Currently available only to select Premium subscribers as a limited trial, Auto Speed represents YouTube's latest effort to optimize long-form video consumption on mobile devices.
Auto Speed could reshape how viewers consume longer videos, particularly on mobile. By trimming less engaging moments while preserving key content, viewers can complete more videos in less time, potentially boosting both user engagement and watch-through rates. For creators, this presents both opportunity and challenge: higher completion metrics, but reduced control over pacing and storytelling rhythm.
The AI evaluates visual and audio cues, including chapter transitions, silence, and static frames, to determine when to accelerate playback. Early testers report smoother transitions compared to manual playback speed controls, though some note occasional skips over subtle visual details or moments that don't register as "important" to the algorithm.
Auto Speed is currently live for a small group of Premium subscribers, with broader rollout plans still under evaluation. YouTube has stated that the algorithm is designed to preserve the most important elements of each video. However, as an experimental feature, Auto Speed may never progress beyond the testing phase depending on user feedback and creator response.
Eligible Premium subscribers can opt in to the trial through their settings menu. YouTube will monitor user feedback during the testing period to determine whether to expand availability or integrate the feature into the standard player interface. The company has not announced a definitive timeline for a full rollout.
