Microsoft patents AI assistant for temporary Xbox control

Microsoft filed a patent for an AI gaming assistant that can temporarily take over Xbox gameplay when a player asks for help, a feature designed to cut frustration during tough boss fights or timed puzzles without ending the session.

The system uses a single on-screen prompt. A player taps "Request assistance," and an AI agent, or a vetted human helper, takes over the controller for the targeted challenge. Control returns to the player once the task is done. Microsoft hasn't announced any rollout plans, and the patent applications remain pending, but the feature could reshape difficulty balancing and push developers to rethink how they design challenges. Temporary control takeover might also raise fairness concerns in multiplayer modes, sparking calls for strong anti-cheat safeguards. Industry observers see similar AI-assisted tools emerging across the gaming sector, pointing to a broader shift in how games define player agency, track achievements, and balance accessibility with challenge.
