Apple to Introduce Privacy-Centric Siri in iOS 27

Apple is reportedly preparing a privacy centered overhaul for its intelligent Siri assistant, offering users unprecedented control over how their interaction history is stored. According to leaks from Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the upcoming version of Siri in iOS 27 will allow users to select specific data retention periods for their chat histories, including options for one month, one year, or indefinite storage.

Granular Control Over AI Memory

The shift represents a strategic move by Apple to differentiate its AI approach from competitors who rely heavily on long term data retention to power personalized responses. While many modern chatbots use extensive interaction history to refine their predictive capabilities, Apple intends to implement stricter limits on how memory functions within its ecosystem.

He emphasized that Apple's strategy involves setting much tighter constraints on what information is preserved and for how long it remains on the system.

This focus on data governance comes at a time when the industry is facing increasing scrutiny regarding how much personal information is used to train large language models. By providing users with clear expiration dates for their data, Apple aims to position Siri as a more trustworthy alternative in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

New Interface and Deployment Expectations

Beyond privacy controls, the next generation of Siri is expected to introduce a dual interface design. Users will likely be able to toggle between a traditional dialogue style, similar to Apple Messages, and a more modern chatbot interface reminiscent of ChatGPT. This new Siri app is expected to be accessible via a standard call or a swipe gesture through the Spotlight search functionality.

Current indications from iOS 27 test versions suggest that these advanced features may still be in a beta state during the initial rollout. Given that the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 is scheduled to begin on June 8, there is a high probability that Apple will deploy these features to developers first. This approach suggests that despite several years of development, Apple may still view these sophisticated AI capabilities as unfinished products.

While the specific release date for the public version of iOS 27 has not been officially confirmed, Apple traditionally unveils its major mobile operating system updates in September. This follows the groundwork laid during the June developer announcements.

Competitive Context

Apple's privacy focus stands in contrast to the data handling practices of other major technology providers. For example, OpenAI maintains user conversations until they are manually deleted, with a process that typically removes data from systems within approximately 30 days. Other ecosystem players offer different configurations, such as Google Assistant's auto delete options for three, 18, or 36 months, or Amazon Alexa's varied storage settings for voice recordings.

As Apple refines its software, the company appears to be prioritizing user agency as a core component of its artificial intelligence strategy. This transition is particularly notable as the company navigates the technical complexities of integrating advanced machine learning while maintaining its brand identity as a guardian of consumer privacy.
